WRESTLERS HAVE CHAMPIONS AT GUTHRIE CENTER

Jason Frain and Quinn Wilson continued their winning ways last Saturday at the 40th Annual Tiger Wrestling Invitational in Guthrie Center, by claiming individual titles in their weight classes.

Jason had two first period pins to set up one of the most anticipated rematches of the tournament.  Jason’s only losses at 160# this season are to his finals opponent, Blake Faucher, from Guthrie Center.  Faucher is undefeated and rated #1 in 1A while Jason is rated #3 in 1A.  Jason came out early with a first period takedown and near fall points but gave up reversal and two near fall points.  In the second period, Jason scored a reversal and had Faucher on his back when Blake hurt his ankle and could not finish the match.  Jason had a 9-4 lead when the match was stopped.

Quinn dominated the 171# class with three first period pins (picking up his 103rd career pin) to set up a finals match with Brick Immerman of Guthrie Center.  Quinn took early control and never allowed Immerman to score enroute to an 8-0 major decision.

Nate Wright scored two first period pins at 152# but lost a very close 10-6 match with #5 rated Jon Elmore of Prairie Valley. Nate was down by two points and made a desperation shot to give up an easy takedown at the end of the match.  Nate pinned Rob Mensing of Nodaway Valley and beat Jake Lamkey of Gilbert for third place.

Wesley Henry placed 5th at 140#, Dallas Dietz placed 5th at 119#, MacKenzie Housman was one match away from placing at 189# and Tony Salvo had to injury default out of the tournament at 130#.

These seven wrestlers gave the team enough points for 6th place of 18 teams.

Three wrestlers participated in the 9-10 portion of the tournament.  Collin Applegate placed 2nd at 103#, Clay Harris was 4th at 112# and R.J. Griger was 4th at 160#.

Riverside will host the Sectional Tournament this Saturday, February 6, at noon.  Teams in this sectional are Riverside, Treynor, Hamburg, East Mills, St. Albert, Underwood, AHST and Southwest Iowa.

The top two teams will compete in a Regional Dual meet Tuesday, February 9, and the State determines the site.  The top two individuals at each weight class will advance to the District Tournament, Saturday, February 13 at noon at Missouri Valley.
